Weaving in Diaspora: Reconnecting Roots with the Bangar Weavers in La Union

Carol Ann is an Ilokana weaver and artist based in Toronto, Canada. Her work is inspired by traditional Ilokano weaving and shaped by her experience as a Filipina in the diaspora. In this webinar, she will share how her weaving practice has become a way to explore identity, reconnect with her family’s roots in Bangar, La Union, and how it has led to meaningful relationships with cultural workers in the Philippines and abroad.

From an artist’s perspective and approach, she will also share her ongoing process when connecting with local weavers and artists in the Philippines. She will talk about recent trips to the Philippines, collaborative projects, and small steps toward reciprocity through documentation, resource-sharing, and exchange.
