Current is a project that builds on the Channels and Currents body of work.
Current plays on the word currency - referring to the system of money as well as how during Spanish colonialism, Ilokano textiles were used for trade.
The use of the word current also refers to the flow or movement of an element such as water, air, or ether or even electricity.
Some questions I asked while weaving this project were: How has the value of weaving in the Philippines changed over time? Why don't inabel weavers get paid well? Why is there exploitation? What about the farmers and labourers? Have we forgotten it's all connected? Have we forgetten that we are all connected?
This project was supported by Canada Council for the Arts.
